Overkill beats the sophomore slump. At least, that's what Kasabian seem to believe. For their second disc Empire, these Leicester lads up the ante by cramming more of everything into the mix.More arena-sized Oasis bombast and hooks. More Happy Mondays irreverence and trippiness. More Chemical Brothers electronica and squiggles. More smooth Beatle-pop melodies. And just to be sure they're outgunning the competition -- and their past -- they add some extra artillery: The androgynous platform-boot stomp of '70s glam-rockers like Sweet, T. Rex and Gary Glitter.Too much too soon? Maybe. Empire flits so quickly from style to style, it never lingers long enough for you to appreciate any of them. And it's so overstuffed it seems to last forever -- even though the 11-track affair takes up less than 40 minutes.
So maybe overkill isn't all it's cracked up to be after all.
