R.E.M are planning to compile their biggest early hits on a new anthology of their I.R.S. Records output in the 1980's, Sound Generator can report.
"And I Feel Fine.... The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982 - 1987" has been developed and compiled by the band to represent their tenure on I.R.S, which saw hits like "The One I Love", "Radio Free Europe" and "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" catapult them to greater fame on Warner Bros. Records.Set for release on September 9th, the release will come in two formats - a 21 track single disc (including a digital collection of hits and band favourites) and a 2 CD Collectors' Edition with a second 21 track disc of rarities, alternate takes, previously unreleased mixes and live recordings of familiar R.E.M. classics. The bonus disc will feature 10 previously unreleased tracks.
Among the newly discovered gems are various concert recordings, an acoustic performance from the 1987 documentary film Athens, GA - Inside Out and alternate studio takes and mixes. Each of R.E.M's four original members has selected a personal favourite for the rarities disc and the package includes descriptive track-by-track annotations in the band members' own words.
Alongside the CD releases, a video DVD collection will also grace shop shelves. "When The Light Is Mine... The Best Of The I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 Video Collection DVD" will be out the same day and includes over two hours of content, with 18 clips in total plus bonus material.
